Plasma TV - What is the Debate?

Plasma TV Review

Plasma TV review? Anyone who tells you that plasma is the best or worst of the television industry is trying to get you to overlook their bias. The fact is that if you want a new TV that can hang on the wall and produce a bright image, plasma may be the best TV to buy. The electronics industry is behind this technology, so you should look at it.

So how does Plasma work?

First introduced in 1964, the plasma television manufacturers have made huge improvements in processing and manufacturing making this television one of the best. The plasma technology differs from other televisions like LCD and CRT televisions by combining all three colors within each pixel. A charge is sent by electrodes between the glass panels to change the state of the plasma gas. The red, green and blue phosphors glow, creates light on the TV screen.

While some manufacturers use fans to cool the plasma TV, some like Panasonic, have models that are air-cooled. With these models, you need to ensure they have a bit of air around the screen. So don’t mount it inside the wall without some space. The ones with fans can be noisy during quiet parts in the movie.

Here are some pros and cons of different TV technologies

CRT TV - It is the most common television. It is usually deeper than many other TVs and has a glass and metal tube. Recently, a flat version has become popular. Very heavy.

CRT Projection TV - The original big TV. They were the only way you could get a TV bigger than 40″. They usually had a bright zone if you sit at eye level and not too far to the side. There is a bit of a depth to the TV and there is a gradual dimming of the picture as it gets older.

LCD - Flat and thin. What else can you say? Very bright image but can have some trailing with fast images if the refresh rate isn’t great.

LCD Projection Television - First you take small LCD panels and you magnify it before projecting it on a big screen. It stays bright until the bulb dies and is user-replaceable.

DLP Projection TV - The chip was developed by Texas Instrument and has million-plus microscopic mirrors that pivot to reflect light. A bright bulb is shone on this chip and the reflection is projected through a spinning color-wheel. The new kid on the block in TV land. The question is, how are the ball bearings and the other moving parts?

Plasma - The image is created by electric charges to change the state of the gas. Thin is in.

Is Debt Consolidation Recession-Proof?

Is a consolidation loan the ideal solution for me? Being in a recession (according to the Ernst & Young ITEM Club Autumn forecast), there’s a real need for persons with problems with debt to see the differences between consolidation loans and the other available financial solutions - and see which one might be the best solution for their circumstances.

To start, it hangs on what happens in the future. In a recession, it’s more than likely to be not very good news - when consumer spending lowers and companies start to lose money, many companies will resort to redundancies as a means to stop the business going under. For any person who has got an idea their company might be making some staff redundant, a consolidation loan might not be a good idea.

Why is that? One of debt consolidation’s top benefits is the opportunity to lower a persons monthly debt repayments. A consolidation loan is most effective when the individuals financial situation is reasonably stable: when they know how much they’re earning and how much they’re spending each month, they are able to figure out the perfect way of repaying their debt.

With a steady income, they can calculate how much they are able afford every month, and make arrangements to repay the consolidation loan at the ideal speed - not too slowly (needlessly postponing the day they will be free of debt, and upping the amount of interest they’ll pay) and slowly (making their monthly budget dangerously thin).

So an individual facing the possibility of unemployment might be better off looking into debt management, instead of a debt consolidation loan. Debt management makes it possible to have a flexible approach to debt: borrowers are able to ask debt management experts to get in contact with their creditors on their behalf, asking them to consider accepting lower monthly payments, remove charges and/or freeze interest.

IVAs require a high level of commitment and need householders to release some of the money tied up in their house. Borrowers must be able to commit to making fixed monthly payments for (most of the time) six years, based on the maximum they are able to afford once they’ve taken their needed expenses into account. Even so, an Individual Voluntary Arrangement can make an important difference - for individuals whose debts have slowly got out of control, as well as individuals faced with a quick fall in their earnings. Granted, IVAs do require a level of financial stability: if the person doesn’t feel they can commit to five years of regular payments, an IVA (Individual Voluntary Arrangement) might not be the right debt solution for them.

Barcode Reader Manufacturers - The Future For Barcode Readers

They’re not really the greatest invention of the recent century. To claim such would be an unbelievable hyperbole. But barcode readers have attained, and kept, their place as indispensable tools for many businesses the world over.

Though the world in general may not have been evolutionized by their introduction to several industries, barcode readers have made quite a fortune for benefiting enterprises and barcode reader manufacturers alike.

Indeed, barcode reader manufacturers have enjoyed tremendous and sustained profit by reason of their main products. Barcode readers have become a must in certain fields that demand for the said products has never waned, instead, has experience a steady increase throughout the years. As a result, barcode reader manufacturers are always aiming to discover new applications and improvements for their cash cow.

The Driving Force Behind Barcode Reader Manufacturers

Like most industry giants, barcode reader manufacturers discovered a need, and they provided for such a need through their worthy invention: barcode readers.

Before barcode reader manufacturers started to distribute their products, businesses involved with the identification and verification of items, especially those in minor or major transits, have been fraught with errors and delays. The reason? Everything was being carried out manually, hence the processes are susceptible to human fallibilities.

Barcode reader manufacturers offered barcode readers to solve these problems. The bread and butter of these barcode reader manufacturers was able to make things more accurate and convenient, resulting in a more efficient and speedy execution of the said processes.

Barcode Reader Manufacturers And The Developments In The Industry

Since the time they have started to offer barcode readers for the usage of relevant businesses, barcode reader manufacturers have likewise introduced improvements over the original models. Today, barcode readers come in a variety of forms, care of the many barcode reader manufacturers in the industry.

Fixed readers, portable batches and portable RF readers are just some of major types of barcode readers that barcode reader manufacturers are currently selling in the market. They come in further variations, of course.

Barcode reader manufacturers have also developed scanner-based barcode readers, camera-based barcode readers, and CDD barcode readers for businesses with equally varied needs.

Barcode reader manufacturers also change the products to conform to current demands. For example, barcode reader manufacturers today offer barcode readers that could decode numeric barcodes. These barcode reader manufacturers also offer barcode readers that could translate barcodes using alphabetic characters. They also offer barcode readers that could identify and verify barcodes with lines of fixed or varying lengths.

Barcode Reader Manufacturers And The Future

Judging from history, only good things can be expected from barcode reader manufacturers in the coming years. The leading barcode reader manufacturers of today such as Symbol Technologies, Intermec, Opticon, Argox and American Microsystems, Ltd. Are already positioning themselves for their continued success in the future.

They are heavily investing on their research and development departments to come up with better applications and features for the barcode readers they will manufacture for tomorrow.

It is an exciting time for both interested businesses and barcode reader manufacturers. Fueled by unceasing success, the future does look bright for those tools that have helped boost the efficiency of countless businesses throughout the years.

VoIP Broadband Phone Service - The Future is Here!

In 2004 the terms VoIP, internet phone service and IP phone were
foreign to almost everyone except technology professionals and
geeky computer types. Now most people I talk with are at least
slightly familiar with these terms, as the internet phone
service market is now starting to take off. Contrary to what
many people believe, VoIP is not a new technology. It was
introduced to the public in 1995, by a company called Vocaltec.
By using internet phone software, registered users could make
phone calls via their computer using a dialup internet
connection. I made my first internet phone call in 2000 using
my computer, a headset, a dialup internet connection and a free
account with Net2Phone. The sound quality was terrible, but it
was an absolutely fascinating experience to be making a free
long distance call over my computer. Now in 2005, ten years
after the first commercial use of VoIP, the technology is
finally ready for prime time!

Significant improvements have been made with VoIP in the past
five years, and communications companies have started investing
heavily in the technology. The quality and reliability of
service has improved so much within the past year or so that
VoIP is now suitable and reliable enough for everyday
residential and business use. In fact, so much attention is now
being given to the continued improvement of VoIP technology that
it’s well on it’s way to becoming the PREFERRED method of
communication by home users and businesses alike.

There were around 1.5 million internet phone users in the USA in
2004, and around 2.1 million today according to
Telecommunications Industry News. According to various
statistics I’ve seen, the number of VoIP users in the United
States is projected to be around 17 to 18 million between 2008
and 2010. This in an increase of over 1000% within the next 3
to 5 years! Experts also estimate that by 2007, 75% of long
distance calls worldwide will be made via the internet. The US
is currently not the biggest user of VoIP technology - there
are about 7 million users in Japan out of approximately 12
million worldwide today. The internet phone industry is
booming, and will continue to grow over the next decade. It
seems that everyone including EBay wants in on the exploding
VoIP market now, as evidenced by their purchase of VoIP provider
Skype in September 2005.

More people are showing interest in obtaining Internet Phone
Service because they are starting to hear more about it. This
is due in part to more “converted users” raving about the amount
of money they are saving and the great features they get for
free (I love my Packet8 VoIP service so much I wrote a website
about it!). A greater awareness has also come from increased
advertising efforts by major cable and communications
companies. Many cable television and phone service companies
(like Verizon) have been pouring money into VoIP technology in
order to capture some of this new market share.

In an effort to hold on to their customers, many regular PSTN
(public switched telephone network) phone companies are now
offering “unlimited long distance calling” for a flat monthly
fee of around $39 per month. Current subscribers are starting
to cancel their traditional phone service as they are convinced
that VoIP is a better option. Not only is VoIP cheaper (under
$25 a month for unlimited calling), but most providers throw in
all of the optional features for free. Phone companies charge
extra for services like voicemail, caller id and call waiting.
I think phone companies have missed the boat when it comes to
competing with VoIP, but that’s a topic for another
article……

With all of the telephone service options now available, it is
becoming difficult for consumers to choose the right provider
for their needs:

Should you subscribe with a true VoIP service service provider
(like Vonage, Packet8, SunRocket, Voip.net, etc…), or should
you choose the phone service that your cable company
provides? If you compare VoIP provider rates with those of
the cable company, “pure” VoIP providers are clearly the
winner.
Cable companies do provide free installation, but
VoIP is really very simple to install. Many cable companies
offer discount through “package deals”, but it’s always smart to
compare total cost and included features with VoIP providers
before making a decision. For a comparison of major VoIP
providers, visit http://www.saveonphoneservice.c
om.

Should you switch to VoIP and get rid of your landline phone, or
keep what you’ve got and pay for unlimited long distance
calling? If you don’t use the internet, keep your landline
phone and forget about VoIP for now. To get the most bang for
your buck out of VoIP service, you need to have cable internet
service. This eliminates the need for a phone line and “dial
tone” that you have to pay the phone company for. To use VoIP
in the most cost effective way, calls shouldgo through your
cable broadband connection - this eliminates the need for
standard phone service. VoIP does not work well over dial up
internet; you really need broadband in order to get the best
audio quality.

Depending on your long distance calling habits, VoIP internet
phone service can save you between 40% - 80% per year vs.
traditional PSTN phone service. The technology is mature now
and the quality of service is great (and getting better all the
time). It’s hard to beat unlimited local and long distance
calling for less than $25 per month
; plus you get free
voicemail, caller id, call waiting, call return, and all the
other features that normally cost extra.

VoIP is definitely here to stay, and cost savings is only one of
the many benefits it offers. Internet phones will change the
way the world communicates. It’s now possible to live in
another country and have a US phone number, you can have several
“virtual” phone numbers in different states or travel the world
and bring your home phone with you. It’s an exciting time in
the world of communications - are you ready to switch to VoIP?

Da Vinci Code Claims Jesus Married Mary Magdalene But Where’s the Proof?

The Code’s claim

At the heart of The Da Vinci Code (novel by Dan Brown, movie directed by Ron Howard and starring Tom Hanks, Audrey Tautou, Ian McKellen, Paul Bettany, and Jean Reno) is the claim that Jesus Christ married Mary Magdalene (we’ll call her “Mary M.”).

The character Sir Leigh Teabing offers proof from a document called The Gospel of Philip, which he claims was written by the Apostle Philip. Teabing quotes a passage that says Mary M. was Jesus’ “companion,” which Teabing interprets to mean his wife. He goes on to quote a passage that says Jesus often kissed her on the mouth.

The main characters accept these claims uncritically and for the rest of the novel/movie assume that they are true. But are they? Did Jesus really marry Mary M.? Let’s examine the facts.

Return to the source

First, what does the Bible say? I appeal to the Bible because it provides us with a historical account of the life of Jesus written shortly after the events took place. Matthew and John were eyewitnesses of these events. Mark is reported to have written down the testimony of the Apostle Peter. Luke explains that he “carefully investigated everything from the beginning” (Luke 1:3), and a close reading of the Book of Acts (Luke’s volume two) reveals that as a companion of Paul he often had access to people who had known Jesus during His earthly ministry. The rest of the New Testament concerns issues and events in the period up to roughly 50 years after the death and resurrection of Jesus.

The Bible nowhere mentions Jesus having a wife. To the contrary, in Matthew 19:11-12, Jesus himself praised the single life as a gift some have received from God; for them it is better not to marry:

Not everyone can accept this word, but only those to whom it has been given. For some are eunuchs because they were born that way; others were made that way by men; and other have made themselves eunuchs because of the kingdom of heaven. The one who can accept this should accept it.

Apparently this path is what Jesus Himself accepted: a self-imposed renunciation of marriage for the sake of His ministry. John the Baptizer and the Apostle Paul (see 1 Corinthians 9:5) likewise traveled this lonely road. The Essenes and probably other members of Jewish sects chose to live as celibates.

Who is the Magdalene?

Mary M. is identified as one from whom Jesus drove out seven demons (Luke 8:2; Mark 16:9). She was one of Jesus’ disciples and was among those who accompanied Him from Galilee to Jerusalem. She is the Mary who saw the risen Jesus in the garden just outside the empty tomb (see Mark 15:40-41, 47; 16:1-8, [9-11]; Matthew 27:55-56; 28:1-10; Luke 23:49, 55-56; 24:1-11; John 20:1-2, 10-18). The term ‘Magdalene’ probably means “person from Magdala,” a town on the western shore of the Sea of Galilee, about halfway between Capernaum and Tiberias.

Mistaken identity

Mary M. has often been confused with Mary, the sister of Martha and Lazarus, who lived in Bethany in Judea, just outside of Jerusalem. She has also been mistaken for the unnamed sinful woman who at the house of Simon the Pharisee washed Jesus’ feet with her tears and dried them with her hair (see Luke 7:36-50). If this woman were Mary M., why is she introduced two verses later (Luke 8:2) as someone new? Some also think Mary M. is the woman taken in adultery, as recorded in John 7:53-8:11 (missing from many early manuscripts). Nothing in the text of John or any of the other three canonical gospel accounts supports this.

Why make her a heroine?

Second- and third-century Gnostics picked up on the appearance of Jesus to Mary M. as recorded in John 20, speculating that He must have said more to her than what is recorded there. In fact, they have seen fit to provide us with a discourse Jesus is supposed to have had with Mary M. They have transformed Mary M. into a disciple to whom Jesus imparted secret instruction, as recorded in the document called The Gospel of Mary [Magdalene].

However, it seems the Gnostics confused this Mary with the Mary of Bethany, for it says Jesus loved her more than other women, apparently a reference to John 11:5, which merely says, “Jesus loved Martha and her sister and Lazarus.” Because The Gospel of Mary’s content is thoroughly Gnostic in character, we can confidently reject it as an authentic record of a historical conversation the two had.

At the end of the document, Andrew and then Peter reject what Mary has said because it is so different from what Jesus taught them and because she is a woman. Levi (same as Matthew), however, rebukes Andrew and Peter, and it ends with the disciples going out to proclaim the gospel of the kingdom, presumably having accepted her teaching as genuine.

‘Companion’ and ‘kissing’

The document known as The Gospel of Philip does not make so much of Mary M., but it does say this:

There were three who always walked with the Lord; Mary, his mother, and his sister and Magdalene, the one who was his companion. His sister and his mother and his companion were each a Mary….

And the companion of the [missing, possibly “Lord was”] Mary Magdalene. [missing, possibly “Jesus loved”] her more than [missing, possibly “all”] the disciples [missing, possibly “and used to”] kiss her [missing, possibly “often”] on her [missing, possibly “mouth.”] The rest [missing, possibly “of the disciples were offended by this.”] They said to him “Why do you love her more than all of us?” The Savior answered and said to them, “Why do I not love you like her? When a blind man and one who sees are both together in the darkness, they are no different from one another. When the light comes, then he who sees will see the light, and he who is blind will remain in darkness.”

Despite the claim of the Da Vinci Code character Sir Leigh Teabing that in Aramaic, “companion” means “wife,” nothing in the context of this passage suggests that Jesus was married to Mary M. The original Gospel of Philip manuscript is in Coptic, an Egyptian language related to Greek, not Aramaic, as Da Vinci Code implies.

The corresponding Greek word for “companion” is koino-nos, which means “partaker, partner, participant, one who shares.” Here are the ten places this word occurs in the New Testament, not one time does it mean wife: Matthew 23:30; Luke 5:10; 1 Corinthians 10:18, 20; 2 Corinthians 1:7; 8:23; Philemon 17; Hebrews 10:33; 1 Peter 5:1; 2 Peter 1:4.

The Gospel of Philip passage merely suggests that Mary M. was a close disciple of Jesus, nothing more.
The manuscript has lacunae (gaps or holes), as indicated by the brackets. The missing text has to be reconstructed, and a degree of uncertainty remains whether the reconstruction is accurate. The editor of the documents states:

[T]here is the physical deterioration of the books themselves, which began no doubt before they were buried around 400 C.E., advanced steadily while they remained buried, and unfortunately was not completely halted in the period between their discovery in 1945 and their final conservation some thirty years later. When only a few letters are missing, they can often be filled in adequately, but larger holes must simply remain a blank. (Robinson, 2-3).

It is entirely possible that “mouth” is not the right reconstruction. The missing word could have been cheek, hand, or even forehead. No one knows for sure.

What we do know is that the context indicates that the kiss only signifies her favored status as a disciple; no sexual overtones are present. The idea of her favored status must be an inference the Gnostic author of The Gospel of Philip made based on Jesus’ post-resurrection appearance outside the tomb.

But a more plausible reason might be that the crucifixion had filled Mary M. with an inconsolable grief, and the empty tomb only compounded it. Jesus may have appeared to especially to her out of compassion for her hurting heart. Another possible explanation is that he chose her and the other women as a way of conferring honor on women, making them the first to testify to the resurrection of their Lord.

Unreliable claim

Yet, even if The Gospel of Philip reported a marriage between Jesus and Mary M. (which it does not), it would remain the mere claim of a Gnostic who produced this document long after the canonical gospels were in circulation.

The manuscript was found in 1945 among other documents, all of which are now know as “The Nag Hammadi Library.” Scholars have assigned the approximate date of 400 C.E. to when all of them were buried. An examination of the contents of Gospel of Philip demonstrates its secondary character. For example, it speaks of the Jerusalem temple using the past tense (immediately placing it after the 70 C.E. destruction of Jerusalem) and refers to phrases from the canonical gospels and epistles as if they are well known, providing Gnostic interpretations of them. All of this suggests that the original Gospel of Philip, while it could be much earlier that 400 C.E., it post-dates the New Testament by probably a hundred years or more.

Which can we trust?

The New Testament provides us with a trustworthy, reliable account written during while many of the eyewitnesses were still alive to confirm or deny what was written. The apocryphal account we read in The Gospel of Philip and other writings of the second to fourth centuries are much later and are telling a different story to introduce doctrines contradictory to what was proclaimed by the apostles. Unlike the works of its namesake, Leonardo, The Da Vinci Code is no masterpiece of research—its historical blunders are too glaring.

Want to go deeper?

If you want to read the authoritative English translation of The Gospel of Mary and The Gospel of Philip, including its lacunae, you can find it in James M. Robinson, ed., et al., The Nag Hammadi Library, 3d ed. (New York: Harper & Row, 1988). (Unfortunately, the online version of The Gospel of Philip does not show the lacunae, but presents conjectures as if they are part of the text.) You can also find a discussion of but The Gospel of Mary, The Gospel of Philip, and other Gnostic documents in Edgar Hennecke and Wilhelm Schneemelcher, eds. New Testament Apocrypha, Vol. 1: Gospels and Related Writings, R. McL. Wilson, trans. (Philadelphia, PA: Westminster, 1963). For more on Gnosticism and its relationship to Christianity, see Ronald Nash, The Gospel and the Greeks: Did the New Testament Borrow from Pagan Thought?, 2d ed. (Phillipsburg, NJ: P & R, 2003) and Edwin Yamauchi, Pre-Christian Gnosticism: A Survey of the Proposed Evidences, 2d ed. (Grand Rapids, MI: Baker, 1983).

TV Shows are Showing Up Online

Television advertising will always be with us, but the growth of the internet and other communication technologies has certainly changed it. Many feel that prime time commercials are not as effective as they once were, and viewers often “tune them out” or zip past them on TiVo. As a result, television networks are looking for new, creative ways to generate ad dollars, including selling some of their best shows to online outlets for people to enjoy on their computers, cell phones, or iPods.

The good news is that these new forms of online and internet programming offer a great advertising opportunity for small businesses. Although online programming contains fewer commercial breaks than television programming, these breaks can feature multiple commercials from the same advertiser, allowing the message to have a better chance of “sinking in.” Marketers also hope that having fewer commercials will be very popular with audiences, and that the ads shown will then have a stronger impact.

Although television networks depend on commercials, viewers are often frustrated with the number of ads they must view during a program. An average half-hour show contains about eight minutes of commercials, making it seem “cluttered” to both audiences and advertisers. With online programming, fewer commercials can feel like less of an interruption to viewers, and feel like less competition for advertisers, too. And since the audience for online programming is typically smaller than for television, the cost can be less expensive, yet reach a more targeted market segment.

As the networks continue their efforts to sell ads across various platforms (the internet, mobile phones, iPods, web sites, etc.), small businesses should watch for opportunities to reach their markets through these new methods. Television advertising isn’t what it used to be, which may turn out to be good news for small businesses. Stay tuned.

Celebrities - Most Popular Broadway Stars

Broadway is unique. In most venues, TV, movies, radio, etc., we never really get to see our favorite celebrities up close and personal. But Broadway is different. Depending on how much money you dished out for tickets, you may end up just a few feet away from your favorite Broadway star. This is something that can’t be equaled by any other medium of entertainment, excluding of course sports events. But to get a courtside seat to a Knicks game is going to cost you thousands of dollars. Few real people can afford that.

In the meantime, Broadway has certainly given us our share of popular stars. One needs to look no farther than Julie Andrews who originated the role of Eliza Doolittle in “My Fair Lady.” Many people felt it was strange that she wasn’t picked to do the movie version, especially since Audrey Hepburn couldn’t even sing and had to have her vocals dubbed in. Certainly one of the strangest casting jobs in all of movie history.

If you’re looking for a more recent example, there is always Michael Crawford who originated the role of “The Phantom Of The Opera” in the early 80s. Crawford’s portrayal was so incredible that he was actually named a living legend because of it. Nobody has since sung “Music Of The Night” like Crawford, a song that has been literally linked with him for all eternity.

If you need an even more recent example of two people who will forever be linked with a show, you need look no farther than Kristin Chenoweth and Idina Menzel who portrayed the good witch and the wicked witch respectively in the Broadway production of “Wicked.” When it came time to hand out the Tony Awards for that year it was literally a toss up as to who was going to win between the two of them. Menzel ultimately ended up winning. It was said that these two were so perfect for their roles that there may never be anyone who comes close to pulling off a performance as great as the ones these two gave us.

And then of course there are the Broadway stars that transcend Broadway and grace just about every corner of stage and screen. There is no better example of this than Hugh Jackman who was simply brilliant in “The Boy From Oz” and “Oklahoma.” Many of us also know him as Wolverine in the “X-Men” series of movies. Jackman is probably one of the most popular performers on stage today.

The list, of course goes on and on. There’s currently Sara Ramirez and Christopher Sieber of “Spamalot,” a Monty Python goof that is probably one of the funniest plays to come out in a very long time that mixes comedy with some of the best, and most hysterical, music around. Just one listen to “The Song That Goes Like This” is all you need to realize that Ramirez and Sieber are pure comic and musical geniuses.

And just think of it. These are people who you can actually see live.

It doesn’t get any better than that.

Entertainment: Keep Your Kids Busy

The daytimes can be boring very often for children, especially in the summertime when they are out of school. At those times parents have to make sure their children are properly entertained. Parents should want their children to have physical activity of course but they should also want their children to have their minds stimulated.

That is a great reason why it is important to have DVDs, videos, and CDs around the house that children can watch and listen to. There are a large amount of studios producing those types of entertainment because they know of their importance for the development of young children.

Another great thing about those types of entertainment is, they are not all cartoons that involve characters running around with mallets. Their are many educational titles that can teach children their ABCs, as well as potty training and other important things.

Another great benefit is that parents can accomplish the things they need to accomplish while their children are sitting in front of an entertaining video learning the things that will be necessary for them to succeed in life. If you do not have those different types of entertainment in your home, you and you children are missing out.
