Using Palladium in White Gold Jewelry Means No More Allergic Reactions

For these individuals, contact with nickel can result in dermatological problems that range from a mild skin rash to severe open sores and permanent scaring. In Europe, there are laws governing the use of nickel in jewelry. The European law is known as “The Nickel Directive” and states that no nickel can be used in a material that sits in an open wound, such as after piercing, until healing is complete.

What is a jewelry buyer to do when faced with this information? First of all relax, most people do not have severe reactions to nickel. And jewelers are starting to use alloys that contain less nickel to develop white gold jewelry.

Some nickel-free white gold alloys were originally developed in the 1920s using palladium as the primary bleaching agent. Palladium is part of the platinum group of metals. It is a steel-white metal, does not tarnish in air, and is the least dense and lowest melting of the platinum group metals. Palladium has very good corrosion and tarnish resistance, and it mixes well with gold, offering almost complete homogenization throughout the range of gold-palladium compositions. All these factors make it a good choice for white gold jewelry manufacturing. It also yields alloys with excellent mechanical properties superior in many respects to the nickel-whites which can be difficult to work with and contain pockets of gold and nickel because the two metals don’t like to be mixed. Jewelry made from a palladium/gold alloy will not result in allergic reactions.

You might be asking: “If palladium is so much better than nickel to make white gold, why don’t all jewelers use it?” The answer is cost. Palladium is a bit more expensive to use. The cost of an ounce of palladium is around $300 currently and consumers don’t like paying higher prices for what appears to be the same jewelry product. However, once people know the facts about nickel white gold and the allergic risks it presents many are willing to pay a little more.

Another white metal on the horizon is 950 Palladium. Some jewelry manufacturers are making product from new palladium alloys that can be cast into jewelry. This is a wonderful metal because it is a bright white color, very similar to platinum, but has a much lower price. It is still relatively new so jewelers are still learning how to work best with this metal. Keep your eyes open though, because you will soon be seeing more of this product, especially with the cost of platinum currently above $1,000 an ounce.

Be Interactive, Not Reactive or Proactive

Run, run, run. React to this, react to that. How can you be effective when you are continuously being pulled into situations? You want a way out and you think the solution is to become proactive. But how? And what does this mean? Are you now simply pushing the same people and situations that used to be pulling you? And how can you know if you are headed in the right direction?

Being reactive implies your action begins after the fact; acting in response to a stimulus or situation, as if simply poised waiting for something to happen. I don’t think this is ever the case. I usually feel reactive when I am hit with something I did not anticipate.

The other tactic is to be proactive, which implies that your response is preceding the action. Creating a solution before being requested to have one. Anticipating what is needed and having it ready. This seems like a great position to be in; however you need to know what to be ready for. You cannot anticipate everything. The important question is how to be selective?

What does it mean to be Reactive or Proactive?

A little analysis will show something about these two tactics or styles of business effort.

Benefits: When you are reactive you know there is a situation requiring action. Unfortunately the correct action is usually needed prior to you hearing about it, so you now take corrective action - clean up the mess or stop the leaks. A proactive tactic may head off trouble or anticipate a request. Or, you may be off the mark. You may be doing something unwanted. You will only find this out after you are done - the hero if you focused on the correct situation, reacting yet again if you did not.

Learning: Not much is learned in either case. A reactive style doesn’t pay much attention to expanding knowledge, new skills or finding a better way. There is not much time to learn when you get one situation handled and another pops up. The proactive style is always looking forward; it rarely reflects or evaluates results.

Costs: A lot of effort goes into both tactics. They each take enormous amounts of energy to keep going. Neither is mindful of resources. The reactive style throws everything available at the situation and the proactive style often uses resources to plan ahead in areas that are not needed or important.

Characterizations: A Reactive style is coiled, anticipating, and defensive. The Proactive style is pushing out, busy, and alert. Both are vigilant stances.

Be Effective, be Interactive

What would be an alternative to these two styles? Being Interactive. This means you get involved and stay involved with people without there being a problem or situation. You know what is happening around you. What are your bosses’ goals? What concerns do your peers and customers have? If you have people reporting to you, what are they thinking about? And don’t be shy about your own goals and needs. Make sure other people know what you are thinking and planning. The more you know about your organization and the more people know about your goals, the more successful the organization and you will be.

An analysis of interactive tactics shows a different picture.

Benefits: You are very involved with your environment.

Learning: High levels of insight and knowledge building.

Costs: Maximization of resources; not waiting, not over planning or jumping the gun.

Characterization: Involved, asking questions, doing research, finding out how things work, what is needed, what isn’t.

Will being interactive mean that you will never be blindsided and start to feel reactive? No. However, when the unexpected happens you will have a better sense of how urgent the matter is because you will know the priorities of your business. You will know who to work with so it can be resolved with a minimum of fuss and effort. Does it also mean you never have to be proactive? Of course not, in fact a proactive style will be a natural outcome of being interactive. You will know what is needed and not have to second guess those around you - you will know that you are headed in the right direction and have support and understanding from colleagues and clients.

Will everyone respond positively to this change? No. However most will respond well as they see you are interested in them and their concerns and goals. And others will come around as you practice and model this new tactic and they begin to see the benefits.

How to change tactics

How do you make this shift? Try these suggestions and then share them with everyone.

1) Take time to debrief with all involved; especially from reactive situations. Work with these questions: What could have been done differently? Do we need a contingency plan in place for this (process, strategy, etc.)?

2) Create learning situations with clients and colleagues. Teach what you do and know. Learn what others do and what they need. Update this learning often.

3) Be creative - use the learning to the benefit of all parties. Share ideas, link ideas. Look for best practices, benchmarking, clear roles and responsibilities.

4) Look for barriers to understanding and cooperation. Then work with others to eliminate these as they arise.

5) When going into a new situation, ask of everyone: What do you want to happen? How will we measure our success? Look for understanding, past successful actions - start out right.

6) When completing a task, ask everyone: How could this be better?

Use these suggestions to reduce frustration and anxiety and introduce stability and creativity.

They say it is lonely at the top; this is nothing compared to being stuck in a reactive or clueless proactive position - not being effective when you want to do well. Being interactive gives you a tactic to work well with people. And it might be the tactic that gets you to the top, so you can find out if it is really all that lonely.

Why You Have to Know Algebra?

We can say that Algebra is the heart of maths. If you really want to know about mathematics and its basic principles then you should have a perfect and in depth knowledge of algebra. Deriving the result for the product of 223 and 112 is quite easy if you use a computer. However, in a case where you need to work around the exponential of 223 and logarithm of 112, you will surely need an algebraic software application. Graphing a circle will be easy for this given formula X2 + Y2 = 4 but when it comes for an inequality like (X-2)2 + (Y-4)2 > 20 then it will be quite harder to plot the graph. In this situation algebra application can help you a lot because once you enter the inequality in the program, the graph will get plotted automatically within no time. Such software systems can easily resolve any kind of algebraic, arithmetical and radical expressions of any level of complexity.

Domain and Range of a Function

Now it is very easy to calculate the domain and range of functions like Y = X2, you can just tell that X and Y can take any real number from the X-Y plane but have you ever thought of defining the domain and range of log(tan 2x + sin 3x) = cosine(-4)(2x). But thanks to algebra calculating systems, you can now solve these complex sums in very little time while being able to understand every step of the way that it takes you to successfully resolve the mathematical question.

Coordinate Geometry

It is now, easier than ever to find the vertex and directrix or whether a parabola opens up or down, using algebra software systems. In addition, subtraction and multiplication of trinomials, you are more likely to become tired because they require a lot of terms to be manipulated. However, by leaving the job up to algebra calculators, you will be able to get results within a shorter period with 100% accuracy. Solving determinants and matrices of 3×3 or 4×4 order can become very hard since it involves lots of calculation; getting inverse of matrices even more so. However using algebra software packages will make this task much simpler.

So, with the introduction of algebra software, the times where you dreaded the sight of indices, fractions or fractional equations , comes to an end. If you could not stand geometry, you may even start liking it afterwards thanks to the computerized algebra systems that will automatically solve everything you ever need.

Do You Read Books?

For many, books are a passion that can not be passed up. These people face a challenge, though. Sure, books are available in many of the finest libraries around the world. But, did you know that in the hectic society that we are living in that books that are found in book stores are on their way out? Yes, it is true that more and more book stores are closing their doors. This has become a sad testament to the way we live our lives.

Often, individuals who are looking for specific books will go to the book store, request it and either buy it or go somewhere else to buy it. Those that browse from shelf to shelf, examining the bindings of several books, possibly reading the flaps of a few, are on their way out. Book store owners claim that people are just too busy to stop and browse the selections. They do not have time to touch the bindings of beautifully bound books to determine if they are worth the cost. Instead, they want the books they have seen advertised or those that have been talked about enough to where they draw the attention in. Sad, but it is oh so true.

Does this mean that less and less people are reading books? No, not necessarily. More people are finding other avenues to get the books they want to read. In some areas, libraries have grown in popularity as the cost of books has risen. It is much more economical to wait a few weeks to borrow a book, read it, then return it without spending one red penny (that is of course if you don’t have to deal with late fees). Other people are heading to discount department stores that carry many of the latest fads in books from children’s to inspirational to classics. These stores can offer smaller prices than any of the book stores we know of.

In the end, books are still books. They still hold an adventure within their pages that brings life to our lives. We can still get carried away in their thoughtful _expression and intricate details. The worlds that are within the pages can still help us to forget about our own world for at least a few minutes anyway. No matter where we get the books we read, we know that having a good one by our side is the most important of all points.

The 5 Ws of Ebooks

Anyone browsing the internet for information quickly encounters
ebooks. Sometimes those electronic books are clearly identified by name and intent but other ebooks are so cleverly disguised a reader may not even realize they are actually a book and not a web site or some other electronic document.

What exactly is an ebook? An ebook is simply an electronic book.
Many ebooks today are found in pdf (or portable document format)
but you can also find various word processing documents being used as ebooks as well as programs and text files that serve as ebooks. There are also some unique programs that create ebooks in a format specific to that program.

Ebooks (just like their print relatives) are documents containing
words in a convenient package. Ebooks do also have the ability to
secure or protect access which means sometimes you can’t print an
ebook or copy it while others can be copied and shared easily.

While many professional publishing companies now create electronic as well as traditional books, many ebooks are now created by individuals or small organizations. The readers who use ebooks are just as varied as those who create them. You can find electronic books in physical and electronic libraries and book stores as well as throughout the internet.

Ebooks are used to share information, teach, entertain, and sell or promote — just as are their print counterparts.

Ebooks have many advantages over print books. They are much more
inexpensive to produce and can move from idea to finished product
much more quickly as well. This also makes ebooks much easier and
more cost effective to keep updated. In addition, ebooks allow
greater interactivity with the reader and the internet.

However print books still retain the advantage in some areas. Some ebook formats are restricted in use to specific types of computer programs, web browsers or operating systems. Also, while computers and electronic devices are pervasive in much of the modern world there are still areas where a print book is more convenient or feasible.

For internet marketers ebooks can serve a variety of purposes.
Ebooks can be created and packaged as commodities to sell, but for many internet marketers ebooks that are given away are a much more powerful tool. Creating useful ebooks that share free information that is attractive to a specific target audience can be a powerful viral marketing tool.

Creating an useful free ebook can help provide valuable advertising for any internet marketer by establishing credibility and expert status which may well lead the reader to then visit the author’s web site and/or sign up for a newsletter. Some ebooks are created with a “soft sell” approach to achieve that goal while others use a “hard sell” approach and go for a sale within the book itself. If you create an ebook that includes valuable information that can be freely exchanged with others then it can, and will, be circulated around the internet and continuously work to promote its creator’s web site and products.

Ebooks can be a very valuable internet marketing tool.

Gym Equipment: Only Buy Quality

Home gyms, how do you select a correct home gym from the myriad of home gyms available? I’ve many individuals purchase home gym equipment without investing lots thinking into the procedure of picking out a outstanding piece of home gym equipment. I think, at times that people will place more thinking into picking out what to make for breakfast than selecting a home gym.

It is real that the choice and variety in home gyms is virtually too much to handle. I can for sure understand why people might just think to purchase whatsoever piece of home gym equipment is advertized or seems hot. Surely, aesthetics does play a role in how we might pick out a home gym. Still, looks ought to be the least criteria to use.

Home gyms come in all shapes and sizes. Notwithstanding, when looking at home gyms I believe the first criteria ought to be durability. If a gym is not durable then, of course, you will discover yourself in the market place for a another home gym soon after buying the original. Yet, worse than that is the fact that psychologically when you are exercising you recognise the gym is feeble and unknowingly hold back on workouts with intensity. Intensity is a crucial element in having a great workout.

Thence, the essential criteria to look at when choosing home gym equipment is durability. They’re many home gyms that are intentionally created not to last. The cost may be tempting, however, if the gym equipment fails after just a few uses then it is money wasted.

Romantic Cruise Getaways by “Freestyle Cruising”!

Are you looking for a romantic cruise getaway that is less formal and more relaxed - all cruise long? Then “Freestyle Cruising” by Norwegian Cruise Lines may be for you!

Norwegian Cruise Lines has been an innovator in the cruise industry. And the introduction of their patented “Freestyle Cruising” is perhaps their best yet! What is Freestyle cruising? Why would I prefer this concept over the traditional cruise experience?

Romantic “Freestyle” Dining

A romantic getaway aboard a Norwegian cruise ship offers passengers the ultimate in freedom. The cruise ships in Norwegian’s fleet are purpose built for the “Freestyle” experience. On these ships, cruisers can decide to dine when they want - each night! Your romantic getaway may include a few late meals and a couple of early evening meals. No more set dining times when you cruise Norwegian.

A romantic cruise aboard a Norwegian ship may take you to a different dining room each night of your getaway - now that’s getting away! And you may choose a quiet table for two or perhaps a table for eight to enjoy your fellow passengers’ company. With “Freestyle Cruising” it’s up to you.

Some of Norwegian’s ships have as many as 10 dining rooms to choose from. Each of the dining rooms has a different “feel” and décor. You are sure to find a couple of dining rooms that will appeal to your idea of a romantic cruise.

“Freestyle” Getaways Attire

One “beef” that some male cruisers have- romantic getaway or not - is the need for formal attire during a cruise of a week or longer. Although “Formal Nights” are completely optional on all most cruises, not partaking is frowned upon. Not so with “Freestyle Cruising”. Clothing aboard the Norwegian cruise ships is always “resort casual” in the evenings. Now, for those romantics that wish to have a formal attire night, Norwegian obliges on their longer cruises by designating one or more dining rooms for the occasion. Again, the romantic cruisers have the freedom to choose - formal or casual.

“Freestyle” Getaway Cruise Service

Because “Freestyle Cruising” offers the romantic vacationers a casual relaxed atmosphere does not mean that the service is relaxed or casual. Norwegian has roughly a 1 to 1 ratio of crewmember to stateroom. This means attention to service for the romantic getaways passengers. You can expect the friendly attentive service that cruises have become well known for. And at the same time, you can focus your attention the task at hand - enjoying the company of your partner in a relaxed, casual, romantic atmosphere.

Other “Freestyle” Getaway Features

Norwegian has all of the usual amenities that cruise ships and cruising have become known for. Romantic cruisers have the option of lounging by the pool, or exercising in the gym. Perhaps a relaxing “hot tub” would bubble away the work stress in preparation for an invigorating - or relaxing - romantic stroll on the evening decks before or after dinner. It’s all up to you!

Disembarkation can be a grueling regimen. Not so for romantic cruisers aboard Norwegian ships. “Freestyle Cruising” also means having a relaxed morning of disembarkation with much less regimentation.

As you can see, “Freestyle Cruising” can be a very desirable way to travel for romantic cruise getaways. Freedom to choose where, when and with whom you dine. No required formal attire nights. A relaxed last morning aboard ship. And all of this aboard magnificent cruise ships. What more could a romantic getaway offer that Norwegian “Freestyle Cruising” doesn’t afford their guests.

Depression Directly Related to Team Spirit at the Workplace

A survey of 3,347 Finnish employees aged 30 to 64 has revealed that poor team spirit at work increases risks of depression, and consequently the use of antidepressants. The study, which was published in the Occupational and Environmental Medicine journal questioned participants about their work environment, how they perceived it in terms of team spirit, the level of control their jobs offered, and the use of effective communication at their workplace.

The respondents were also asked to assess whether their work environment welcomed new ideas or whether it was biased and conservative, as well as whether they found their workplace pleasant or hostile. The study took into account the employees’ lifestyle, including their living arrangement and easy access to health services.

The subjects were then monitored over a period of three years for symptoms of depression and use of anti depressants, to find out a correlation between the workplace related factors and the mental health of the employees.

The study showed that the employees who perceived the team spirit at their workplace as poor were 60% more likely to suffer from depression and 50% more likely to use antidepressants than those who were satisfied with their work environment.

Commenting on the results, the authors emphasised that psychosocial disorders ought to be given more consideration in controlling the prevalence of depression. They pointed out that the period from 1990 to 2005 witnessed a worrying sevenfold jump in the use of antidepressants, and unless the root causes of the problem were dealt with, the situation was likely to get worse.

The Worst Journey in the World - Apsley Cherry Garrard

This is the book acclaimed by those who do the acclaiming as the bar-none most compelling tale of people having a bad time, ever told. Paul Theroux describes it as the best adventure book he’s ever read. Couple that with the perennial appearances on the ‘best this’ and ‘best that’ lists and it becomes clear that it deserves considerable consideration by those wishing to be well-read.

There is no doubt Garrard had a horrible time of it. Nor can it be argued that this narrative is anything but compelling; or that the quality of the prose is less than stellar. None-the-less, the accolades given this book lead one to ask, what is it that makes a book the best adventure book ever written? And is this it?

The Worst Journey in the World was written a decade after the fated 1911 Scott expedition to the South Pole. It is a compendium of Garrard’s reminiscences and diary entries, as well as the diary entries of Scott, Lashy and others. For the most part it’s a clear-heading accounting of the expedition that is both realistic of the hardships encountered and of the team’s strengths and shortcomings. Granted, there is certain amount of romance in the telling, but for the most part it avoids the late century gosh-gee-whiz-let’s-add-an-adjective school of story telling which ruins so many contemporary tales.

That said, how good is the book?

If the first criteria is the note-worthiness of the adventure itself, rest assured that Garrard’s account qualifies. That Scott was runner-up in the race to the pole is reason enough to record the event. The fact that he did so in such miserable, and by all accounts unusually harsh conditions makes it even more so. Cherry-Garrard’s winter expedition to collect eggs of from the previously unstudied Emperor penguins was downright awful, and a pre curser to the year ahead …

” … a trip so appalling, so horrendous, so absolute in its misery and its danger that you cannot think a man could endure it for a day, much less for five weeks”

In an era where falling into a crevice just once is seen as a cheating death, Cherry and crew impress with their daily, sometimes hourly plunges through rotted snow bridges. As do their accounts of floundering snow blind through mazes of impassable pressure ridges. Temperature as low as -60 and -70 degrees were common. Every morning the team would prop open the mouths of their sleeping bags so that they would be able to climb back into the frozen bags the subsequent evening. Horrendous hardly seems to be the appropriate epitaph. The fact they survived is beyond comprehending.

As odd as it to say, Scott’s return journey from the pole replete with spectacularly frigid conditions, depleted supplies and eventual stormbound death seems almost manageable. Not that his journey was easier than Garrard’s, but rather quieter and more in the norm of what you and I might expect to be overcome by …

… blizzard bad as ever — Wilson and Bowers unable to start — tomorrow last chance — no fuel and only one or two days of food left — must be near the end. Have decided it shall be natural — we shall march for the depot with or without our effects and die in our tracks.

Thursday, March 29th. Since the 21st we have had a continuous gale from W.S.W and S.W. We had fuel to make two cups of tea apiece and bare food for two days on the 20th. Every day we have been ready to start for our depot 11 miles away, but outside the door of the tent it remains a scene of whirling drift. I do not think we can hope for any better things now. We shall stick it out to the end but we are getting weaker, of course, and the end cannot be far.

It seems a pity but I do not think I can write more.

R.Scott

There is something familiar about the end; proof perhaps that we are mortal, that we are decent, and that there is an intrinsic worth in attempting the unlikely.

There is never any queston that the adventure itself (if one can call it an adventure … Garrard certainly wouldn’t object) is eponymous; it records one of the great endeavours of the modern era. As an adventure in-and-of-itself, however, it’s hardly possible to rate it as greater or lessor on some arbitrary scale against F.A. Worsley’s, Endurance. It’s quite the tale; I’d be a fool to say otherwise. I’d also be a fool to claim it was the greatest of all and so, remain agnostic.

Which leads then to criterium number two; apart from the subject, is the narrative compelling? Well … it isn’t a page turner like Touching the Void is a page turner, but it was written in a different era. And while it doesn’t plod, it is true to its intent and records the expedition as fully as Garrard thought possible. What this means is that everything from zoological observations to crew manifests are recorded, along with the joys and tribulations of the event.

Nor is Garrard interested in leaving the reader hanging at the end of each chapter; he was NOT negotiating a film deal in the background and the story proceeds accordingly … everyone knows the ending and we get there eventually. What will surprise is how quickly it comes and how quickly the 550 pages disappear. Is it the most compelling narrative ever … ? Not really, but it is good. And if one were to take readers’ reactions from consumer sites into account the over-arching opinion has it that it’s very good.

An adventure, no matter how worthy, coupled with a narrative superbly paced does not make a good book if the telling of the tale gets in the way. Common to much recently written adventure lit is a quality of over-enthusiasm … a seeming need by the author to convince a reader of the awesomeness of the events; adjectives multiply, perspective seems lost and we’re left wondering why the author needs to try so hard.

What will strike a reader is how unassuming Cherry-Garrard is, and how he under-states what the expedition was faced with. His is the precise opposite of a typical over-written, over hyped post millenial account. Stiff-upper-lipped-Britness explains it partially. Eric Newby does the same thing in A Short Walk in the Hindu Kush where hardships are downplayed and collegiality reigns. It may be last-gasp-of-the-empire mentality, but the Brits of that class had class. And it shows. It’s this quality exactly that has endeared the account to readers for the last century … and I suspect it’s what readers and editors are responding to when they call it the best adventure book ever.

It is good. It is very good. The best, however … ? Geez, I’m going to weasel on this … for it to be the best, it has to feel the best and somehow … somehow … somehow …suffice it to say that Cherry Garrard’s, The Worst Journey in the World is more compelling than most, better paced than most, and better written than almost all else. It will impress.

Review of Think and Grow Rich by Napoleon Hill

Even if it is 70 years since the book Think and Grow Rich was written, it is still a highly respected and read book. It has sold millions of copies and is a “Bible” for people who are searching financial freedom. The essence of the book is Napoleon Hill’s famous statement: “Everything your mind can conceive, you can achieve” The title says the same, in different words: Think and Grow Rich

The book teaches “The thirteen steps to riches” according to Napoleon Hill.

It offers many questionnaires and practical exercises in addition to all the text. It gives you clear guide lines in how to set goals and reach them and how to make clear plans to follow. You are shown how you can realise your highest potential, and succeed in anything you set your mind to.

It also teaches you not to give up, and see all mistakes as learning opportunities. Napoleon Hill teaches that successful people never considers temporary failure as a permanent defeat.

Napoleon Hill used over 25 years to study over 500 of America’s most successful business men in the start of this century. He took this assignment on from Andrew Carnegie in 1908. If you would like to know more about the life of Napoleon Hill, click Biography and bibliography of Napoleon Hill.

Andrew Carnegie was at the time the richest man in the world and had from being a Scottish immigrant with no money, worked himself the way to become a giant steel manufacturer. If you like to know more about the life of Andrew Carnegie click: Biography of Andrew Carnegie .

Carnegie believed that any one could achieve the same success as him and wanted his success formula passed on to the world. This became Napoleon Hill’s life task.

The success formula is as relevant and useable now as it was 100 years ago. Maybe it is even more relevant, since now people like me and you start to understand that it is not magic and lucky stars that make people rich. It starts with the way we are thinking.

The book teaches you to think differently, and if you are on your way to financial freedom, this one is a must.

The only drawback with the book is that it can be formal and repetitive in the language it is written. (Remember that it was written 70 years ago.)
